The Canakkale strait partially opened on April 24 after having been closed for a few hours due to the grounding of the 39,000dwt tanker Chinook, the Fairplay Daily News reported.
A steering gear failure aboard the Chinook caused the product tanker to swerve out of the fairway and run aground.
No one was injured and no pollution was reported.
Chinook and its 23 crewmembers had been on a voyage carrying gasoline out of Novorossiysk in Russia. The tanker is operated by BP Shipping and is flagged in the Cayman Islands.
