Cameco has informed CNSC that a ship carrying uranium concentrate, en route to Zhanjiang, China had encountered extremely rough seas, resulting in damages to some of the containers. To allow for further inspection, the ship is currently en route back to Canada and expected to arrive in Canadian waters on January 15.
The CNSC has sent a team to inspect the vessel and to monitor Cameco’s response team activities to ensure the health and safety of the workers, the public and the environment.
Given the material properties of uranium concentrate and the required transportation precautions, the risk to the ship’s crew, the response team, and the vessel is inherently low. There is no risk to the environment or to the public at large.
The CNSC will update the Commission Tribunal at its regularly scheduled meeting January 19.
