The fire aboard the passenger ro/ro LISCO Gloria, was caused by burning aggregate of a truck on the upper, open car deck. A crew member reported smoke and tried to contain the fire, but he had to flee as the flames spread rapidly to the nearby tank of the truck which exploded, setting other trucks alight. A terroristic attack was excluded. The vessel, which had suffered a second severe explosion while being adrift, has been anchored by a boarding team which was brought on board by helicopter at midday 2 km off Langeland. The vessel has a list of 15 degrees to port. It is expected that the blaze may rage for another 2-3 days, depending on the cargo in the burning trucks and the remaining fuel. The vessel is getting cooled from outside, but it will be allowed to burn out as more water on board might cause the vessel to get unstable. On the whole 14 vessels were on scene at one time.
The rescue vessels meanwhile were towed to Puttgarden. The 204 passengers and 32 crew were transported to Kiel by the ferry Deutschland and accommodated in the Atlantic Hotel and Navy barracks in the Tirpitz Harbour. 28 of them had to be treated for hypothermia and smoke inhalation, none of them were in a critical condition. One boy of 14was rescued by a helicopter of the 5thNavy Squadron Kiel- Holtenau as his way had been cut off by the flames.
