Hace relativamante poco, se publicó el NTSB del Accidente del Norway, allí se decía, que la causa, o el cúmulo de ellas, que provocó la explosión de la caldera y acabó con la vida de ocho de sus tripulantes, fué el deficiente mantenimiento, operación e inspección de ésta. Claramante, el armador y el BV tenían mucho que ver con el accidente.
Según publica el Fairplay, en el juicio, han declarado culpable a la naviera (puede apelar), esta deberá pagar 1 millón de U$ como multa, mientras que la compensación a los damnificados sera de 13.75 millones.
NORWEGIAN Cruise Line (NCL) will pay nearly $15M in fines and compensation over the May 2003 boiler explosion on the Norway that killed eight crew and seriously injured 10.
It was previously reported that NCL pleaded guilty to a Class A misdemeanour of operating the ship in a “grossly negligent manner”, which carries a statutory fine of $500,000. However, a source in the US Attorney’s Office told Fairplay that given the severity of the incident, there was legal leeway to double the fine to $1M. NCL has been ordered to pay the $1M fine by close of business tomorrow (Friday). In addition, the District Court of Southern Florida ordered NCL to pay preliminary restitution to victims of $13.75M. According to the US Attorney’s Office source, this figure represents what NCL told the court it has already paid families and victims of the casualty. NCL’s restitution records will now be reviewed and the court will reconvene for a follow-up hearing on 20 June this year to determine if any additional restitution is required. NCL has also agreed to a review of its safety procedures by an independent consultant. In its investigation of the Norway tragedy, the National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the explosion was the result of inadequate maintenance, operation and inspection of the Norway’s boilers
Viendo la entrada anterior, con el RD de la creación de la Comisión en España, comentar que el accidente fué el 25 de mayo de 2003 y el NTSB es de finales del 2007, (más de 4 años). Las investigaciones llevan su tiempo, aunque los marinos de salón, periodistas deportivos y pescadores de votos, son capaces de hacerlo en 5 minutos, es sencillo, basta intentar culpar a los bomberos.
