The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) at its 81st session in May 2006 adopted new regulations for the LRIT together with associated performance standards and functional requirements. The LRIT regulation has been inserted in SOLAS V/19-1 and entered into force on 1 Jan 2008. The LRIT regulation applies to ships engaged on international voyage: passenger ships and cargo ships of 300 gross tonnage and above, and Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs). The subject vessels must be fully compliant by the 1st Radio Survey after 31 December 2008.
From midnight, 24:00 hours GMT, on 31 December, 2008, the four original Inmarsat ocean region codes of +871, +872, +873 and +874 will be discontinued.
