‘The emergency services have displayed their usual professionalism in dealing with today’s incident,’ said NUMAST general secretary Brian Orrell, ‘but the clear message from current trends is that next time we may not be so lucky. It is a matter of not “if” there is a major maritime disaster on our doorstep, but “when” it will be.’
We believe these incidents should serve as a wake-up call to the authorities,’ said Mr Orrell, ‘and we are not alone in feeling disturbed at trends within the industry at present.
‘Around 90% of collisions at sea are the result of human factors, yet the industry continues to crew its ships on the basis of cheapness rather than competence,’ he added. ‘Problems such as fatigue and cuts in crewing levels are adding to the risks, and it is time the complacency ended.’
