France: US-style coast guard too expensive
France finds the creation of a US-style coast guard service “too expensive,” as reported by the Fairplay Daily News.
“Creating Coast Guards similar to those in operation in the US is beyond our economic means. We must therefore maintain our current coast surveillance system based on a cooperation between the prefectures, the navy, the ministry of transport and customs, with some improvements,” a Senate report says.
The European Commission is currently working on a feasibility study to create coast guard services at a European level.
France, however, is more focused on strengthening the role of the ministry of transport at the expense of the Navy, which should allocate its budgets to more military missions.
