Nine European Union states are now using satellite images to monitor their waters of jurisdiction while eight others make use of more traditional methods (surveillance with aerial and navigable means). Since 1st January 2007, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has been providing an early oil spill detection service by receiving and automatically processing satellite images from the entire European waters.
